Putting Wind In Our Sails

posted Feb 27, 2015, 5:34 AM by Antigonish Boat Club

Thanks to assistance from the Provincial Support4Sport program, we have placed an order for two sets of sails, a new rudder, side stays, a boom-vang and various other bits and pieces needed to put all 3 of our CL 11 sailboats on the water this summer.

These are great little boats - still manufactured in Ontario; with their kick-up rudder and centreboard, they are perfect for exploring Antigonish harbour.

It's looking as though we'll be offering the popular competent crew course this August. Currently the date is set for the August 16 weekend. The course would start Friday evening and run through Sunday afternoon. Michael Earnst of Sailing Mahone Bay will be the Instructor. Admission to the course will be on a first come, first served basis. The course fee is $250 and includes the CYA manual and certification. Please email to confirm your interest.

The Cost of Sailing

posted Apr 18, 2014, 4:28 AM by Sean Day

I couldn't help but pass this on. In one Kijiji notice this morning, there were 3 very affordable "Step Up" boats. And by that, I mean the ones you might buy after spending some time in a 14 to 16' dingy. Take a look! Get one. Sail to Mabou....or overnight at Bayfield. Go to dinner at Cribbon's or just have fun in the harbour and St. George's Bay

A New Season Beckons

posted Apr 17, 2014, 10:11 AM by Sean Day

Hey Boaters - just letting you know that we're thinking of you. With the harbour now ice-free, adventure is in the air.

We've recently applied for a series of grants which, if approved, will allow us to carry out some improvements at the club (including the installation of a barrier-free washroom / change room). This season, the bulk of the funds will go toward an archaeological assessment of the site which is a precursor to any grounds / shorefront improvements planned for coming years. Please let me know if you'd like a full list of proposed 2014 improvements.

And please help us build our membership. Pass on the word to anyone you think may be interested in supporting the development of this amazing community amenity to its full potential!

Harbour Markers

posted Sep 30, 2013, 9:02 AM by Sean Day

Hello All,
please be advised that the channel entrance to the Antigonish Harbour (outside the throat in the ocean) has changed significantly since the beginning of the year when DFO had marked it.  The sand bar that runs along the north side of the red marker bouys has transitioned into the entrance channel.  I ran aground yesterday at the 1st set of green / red channel bouys (easterly set), and was directly between them.  The tide was coming up from low tide.  My advise is until DFO changes them, that you stay close to the green bouys if you are drawing more than 1-2 ft.  In any event proceed with caution upon entrance / exit.
In addition some marker bouys in the harbour itself have been washed away (presumably from the strong winds/surf 2 weeks ago).  The most important one being a red bouy that marked the corner of the channel adjacent to Beaton's wharf & yellow float plane.  Proceed with caution if you do not know the harbour channel well.
Best Regards,

With our club lease finally approved by Cabinet, it's a bit easier to enjoy a beautiful late afternoon paddle on the habour.
June 3rd, 2013 - could it have been better?

Sailing Comes to Phys.Ed!

Here's a great story about a group who have brought sailing to a school's curriculum down in Lunenburg.

New Group Forum

posted Apr 22, 2013, 6:20 PM by Sean Day

To aid in group discussions about matters related to the boat club, I've added a Google Group under the Forum tab above. Members of the Board have now all received a message inviting them to join. You do not have to have a Google Account to be a group member. The Forum will make setting meetings easier, exploring ideas with the group or even finding people to go boating with.

All the best

Welcome to the New Website

posted Apr 20, 2013, 7:41 AM by Sean Day

Admittedly, a temporary one since a really cool website isn't our highest priority just now. Once a few of the more critical measures are implemented however -- watch out.

The most important aspect of this post is to call attention to the little Subscribe button below. Please click on that and either subscribe via your RSS reader of choice, or via an email that you would like to have new posts sent to. Don't worry - I won't be overwhelming you.

With warmer weather now upon us -- boating season will soon be commencing. Looking forward to seeing you on the water.
